Some other companies use belts because Mouse ears and Harley Davidson kind of girl shirt they’re quieter than chains, but not as expensive as shaft drive. I do not believe this is the reason Harley Davidson chose to implement belts, I think it is simply as a convenience to their customers with lower maintenance. There’s also a bit more safety in a belt, when they break they tend to just fly off, whereas when a chain snaps it tends to wrap around your rear sprocket making it lock up. Harley may have considered safety when changing to belts, evidence for this is dubious with the fact that Harley has not embraced standard ABS on their bikes, or any standard traction control features.
